Filipino & Indonesian Martial Arts in Louisville KY

Looking for a weapons-based martial art with excellent instruction? Then look no farther than Louisville Martial Arts Academy and our Sikal™ program. Sikal™ is the weapons-based art taught at Louisville Martial Arts Academy. From day one, you will learn both empty hand self-defense and weapons training. You will learn not only to effectively use weapons, but also to defend against someone who has one while you are empty-handed. You will learn to use ordinary items that are at hand as a weapon (keys, pen, scarf, water bottle, etc.) to defend yourself. You will learn how to disrupt your attacker's balance and send him flying to the ground despite your opponent being much larger than you. It is truly a martial art for the martial artist. The classes are fun and enlightening whether you are a beginner or an accomplished martial artist in another style.
Sikal™ is a blend of elements from various systems of Filipino Kali and Indonesian Pentjak Silat. The combination of these diverse yet complimentary combative arts provides the student with an excellent balance between being a hand and foot technician, the ability to fight at all ranges, and intimate weapon knowledge. The Sikal™ program is built to give primary emphasis to the Filipino and Indonesian arts individually before teaching how to blend them. This focused development gives the student command of the concepts and techniques necessary for learning and understanding the Sikal™ mix.
The philosophy behind our training method is to give the student a conceptual understanding of weapon usage - whether the weapon is an inanimate object (stick, knife, water bottle, towel, etc.) or a body weapon (fist, elbow, knee, etc.). We help the student to learn to work in cooperation with whatever weapon is available. We're always thinking in terms of multiple opponents and weapons. This conceptual approach also means that the principle of the movements remains the same regardless of the weapon we employ (including our body weapons). In the long run, the student becomes comfortable and capable with and without external weapons of any sort.
Primary influences on Sikal™ are:
Lacoste/Inosanto Blend of Kali from Guro Dan Inosanto
Traditional Doce Pares Eskrima from GM Dionisio "Diony" Canete
Doce Pares Eskrima/Eskrido from GM Ciriaco "Cacoy" Canete
Balintawak Cuentada Eskrima from GM Bobby Toboada
